Big Changes Are Coming in 2026: What International Optometrists Must Know About the New UK Registration Process

June 04, 20254 min read

Introduction: Why 2026 Is a Turning Point for International Optometrists

If you’re an internationally trained optometrist planning to register in the UK, you must act now or prepare for a very different process starting in September 2026.

The General Optical Council (GOC) has confirmed that it will be overhauling how international professionals are assessed and registered. While the new system aims to create consistency, it may also introduce new formal qualification routes for overseas applicants. If you were hoping to take advantage of the current individual assessment model, your window is closing.

In this post, we’ll break down the upcoming GOC registration changes, what they mean for you, and how you can best prepare whether you apply now or later.

Change #1: No More Individual Assessments Before Enrolment

The current system allows you to submit a GOC application and undergo an individual assessment before being referred to the relevant qualifying route (like the College of Optometrists' Scheme for Registration).

❌ What’s changing:

  • From September 2026, the GOC will no longer individually assess applicants for registration eligibility prior to enrollment.

  • You will instead need to enroll directly into a GOC-approved UK qualification, regardless of your experience or prior education.

This means international applicants will be treated more like new graduates, rather than experienced professionals.

Change #2: All Applications Will Be Assessed Against Updated GOC Standards (ETR 2021)

In 2021, the GOC introduced new Education and Training Requirements (ETR), which now form the benchmark for all UK optometry education and training programs.

❗ From 2026 onwards:

  • International qualifications will be measured against these updated standards, including expectations for patient safety, professionalism, and clinical knowledge.

  • The bar for approval will be higher, and the evaluation will be more structured and uniform.

Even if your current qualification is strong, if it doesn’t fully align with ETR 2021, you may need to take additional UK-based training.

Change #3: GOC-Approved UK Qualifications Will Be Required

Perhaps the most significant change: all international optometrists seeking registration will be required to complete a UK-based, GOC-approved qualification to meet the registration criteria.

📌 What this means:

  • Even experienced optometrists will not be able to qualify solely by submitting documents and doing an interview.

  • You must apply to and be accepted into a GOC-approved qualification provider who caters specifically for overseas applicants.

  • Your route may involve bridging modules, clinical training, or assessments designed to meet the new ETR 2021 standards.

⚠️ Note: The exact course structure, duration, and tuition costs are not yet published. These are expected to vary across providers.

FAQs

Q1: If I qualify before 2026, will I be affected by the changes?

No. If your registration is completed before the September 2026 deadline, you’ll follow the current pathway. That’s why now is the best time to take action if you're eligible.

Q2: Will the new GOC-approved qualifications be the same as doing a full UK optometry degree again?

Not exactly, but they may include bridging modules, UK-specific training, or clinical requirements. Final course structure and length will vary by provider and have not yet been confirmed by the GOC.

Disclaimer: The General Optical Council (GOC) has confirmed changes to the registration process for international applicants starting September 2026. While the requirement to complete a GOC-approved qualification is confirmed, details on course structure, fees, and duration are still being finalized by education providers.
