Understanding CLiP: What International Optometrists Need to Know
The landscape of UK optometry training is changing, and one of the biggest updates on the horizon is the introduction of CLiP, the College of Optometrists’ new Competency in Learning and Practice model. If you're an internationally trained optometrist preparing to qualify in the UK, you're probably asking: How will this affect me?
As the CEO of ACN Academy and an international optometrist who’s guided others to UK qualification since 2015, I want to bring you clarity. In this post, I’ll explain what CLiP is, what we know so far about its rollout, and how international candidates can prepare for these changes.
What Is CLiP?
CLiP (Competency in Learning and Practice) is a new training and assessment framework being introduced by the College of Optometrists. It is set to replace the current Scheme for Registration in the near future.
CLiP is designed to:
Create a more integrated approach to clinical learning
Place greater emphasis on entrustability (how independently a trainee can practise)
Incorporate more real-time, in-practice assessments
Modernise the pathway to full registration
Why Is This Important for International Optometrists?
For international optometrists, the Scheme for Registration has been the main route after passing the GOC interview. However, with CLiP on the way, the structure of the training year, including how you're supervised, assessed, and approved for full GOC registration will likely shift.
This raises key questions:
Will the pre-reg year be longer or shorter?
Will OSCEs remain in the same format?
Will new competencies be introduced?
How will visa sponsorship and placements work under CLiP?
While full details are still unfolding, it’s crucial for international candidates to understand what’s changing and plan their timelines strategically.
What Has Been Confirmed So Far?
CLiP will gradually phase in across the UK from 2025 onwards
The College has confirmed that CLiP will be more competency-based, focusing on entrustable professional activities (EPAs)
It will involve more in-practice supervision, assessments, and portfolio-based learning rather than final “high-stakes” exams only
The OSCE may be replaced or merged into broader workplace-based assessments
UK optometry schools are already beginning to align their students to this model
What This Might Mean for You
🔹 If You’re Already in the Process
If you’ve passed your GOC interview and are currently applying for pre-reg placements, you’ll likely proceed under the current Scheme for Registration. It’s wise to keep your timeline moving quickly to avoid being caught mid-transition.
🔹 If You’re Still Preparing for the GOC Interview
CLiP may affect how your training year is structured once approved. While your GOC interview process won’t be directly impacted for now, it’s smart to stay aware of the timing so you can plan your relocation, visa, and placement strategy accordingly.
🔹 If You’re Delaying Your Application
If you wait too long, you might enter the UK system under the new CLiP model, which may come with different requirements, assessment methods, or eligibility rules. While CLiP is designed to enhance quality, a lack of information now makes early action a smarter move.

Final Thoughts
Change is coming, but change doesn't have to mean confusion. CLiP may modernise and improve optometry training in the UK, but for now, the best move is to move forward while the current structure is still available.
