🔍 Understanding Visa Terminology
If you’ve come across terms like Tier 2 or Tier 5 in your research, here’s what you need to know:
Tier 2 is now known as the Skilled Worker Visa
Tier 5 (GAE) is now called the Temporary Work – Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) Visa
These terms were retired in 2020 when the UK immigration system was restructured, but many people (including employers) still use the older language.
Note: Optometrists are NOT currently eligible for the Health and Care Worker Visa, a subcategory of the Skilled Worker route. This route applies only to designated NHS roles.

🛠 Visa Options in Detail
1. Temporary Work – Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) Visa
Ideal for: Those entering the College of Optometrists’ Scheme for Registration (pre-registration training).
Key Points:
Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is issued by the College of Optometrists (£780 fee; £810 from July 2025)
Valid up to 24 months (non-extendable)
Requires GOC approval letter, signed pre-reg contract, and supporting documents
Processing time: ~14 working days after all documents are submitted
Important: You cannot begin pre-reg until the visa is granted.
2. Skilled Worker Visa
Ideal for: Fully qualified optometrists post-pre-reg.
Key Points:
Requires job offer from a UK sponsor-licensed employer
Optometrists fall under Standard Occupation Code 2252
Minimum salary: £38,700 (or £30,960 if under 26 years old) , this requirement applies only for the Skilled Worker Visa, not for GAE/pre-reg applicants
Proof of English proficiency and criminal background check required
📌 Additional Considerations
Visa Validity: GAE visas are non-renewable. If you do not complete pre-reg within the 2-year period, a new visa will be required.
Dependents: Both visa types support dependents under certain conditions.
Switching Visas: You can switch from GAE to Skilled Worker after pre-reg.
